FAQ

1/ What is a @‌bitcoin subspace?

A subspace is your unique identifier in the bitcoin community (like bob@bitcoin) that functions as a trustless Bitcoin-secured identity. It's kind of like .eth but created on and for Bitcoin, and backed by Bitcoin's proof of work.

2/ How is this different from ENS?

Unlike ENS which relies on Ethereum, @‌bitcoin identities leverage Bitcoin's existing infrastructure and security model directly – no new blockchains, no additional trust assumptions. You own your @bitcoin name forever, with the same keys that secure your Bitcoin.

3/ Who controls my @‌bitcoin identity?

Only you. Your identity is linked to a Bitcoin UTXO that you control with your keys. No administrator or company can revoke or control your identity.

4/ How long does my reservation last?

Reservations are forever, you don't need to renew yearly like with traditional domain names or .eth.

5/ What can I use it for?

Some of the first things we plan to build integrations for are payment addresses, nostr usernames, and domain names. It can be used to tie any data to a name in a decentralized and cypherpunk way, secured by Bitcoin.

6/ Can I have any @bitcoin name?

1,2 and 3-character names are reserved for later release. You can register a name between 4 and 63 characters.

7/ How can I verify that I own an @bitcoin identity?

Your @bitcoin identity ownership is verified through a Certificate, which contains your public key and cryptographic proof linking you to the Bitcoin blockchain. There are several ways to verify your ownership:

  1. Check your Certificate: Your ownership of a subspace (like yourname@bitcoin) is verified through a Certificate that contains your public key and a cryptographic proof linking you to the community's on-chain commitment.
  2. Verify against the global_root: For directly on-chain subspaces, you can verify ownership by checking that an inclusion proof hashes to the global_root in the state header.
  3. For off-chain subspaces: Verify ownership by checking an exclusion proof against the global_root and then verifying an inclusion proof related to the commitments_root.
  4. Make a transaction: The most practical way to prove ownership is to sign a message or make a transaction using the private key associated with your Certificate. Since only you control this key, successfully completing such an action proves your ownership.
  5. Check the blockchain: Your @bitcoin identity is represented as a Bitcoin UTXO that you control with your keys, giving you the same security model you trust for your bitcoin. Anyone can verify your ownership through Bitcoin's blockchain.

8/ Can I sell or transfer my @‌bitcoin name?

Yes. Your identity is represented as a Bitcoin UTXO which can be transferred trustlessly, like any other bitcoin transaction.
