A handle is your unique identifier in the bitcoin community (like bob@bitcoin) that functions as a trustless Bitcoin-secured identity. It's kind of like .eth but created on and for Bitcoin, and backed by Bitcoin's proof of work.
Unlike ENS, which lives on Ethereum, @bitcoin handles use Bitcoin directly — no new blockchain and no token. Ownership is proven by a certificate your device can verify itself, rather than by asking a resolver service to tell you who owns what. And unlike ENS, there's no annual renewal: a handle is permanent.
The one thing we do control is who receives a new handle. After that, nothing — we cannot revoke or move a handle once it's issued.
Only you. Your handle is bound to a key that only you hold, and ownership is proven by a certificate you keep. Once issued, no administrator or company — including us — can revoke, redirect or recover it.
Handles are permanent. There's no annual renewal like a domain name, and no expiry.
Some of the first things we plan to build integrations for are payment addresses, nostr usernames, and domain names. It can be used to tie any data to a name in a decentralized and cypherpunk way, secured by Bitcoin.
1,2 and 3-character names are reserved for later release. You can register a name between 4 and 63 characters.
Your handle comes with a certificate containing cryptographic proof that it was issued to your key and never issued to anyone else. The Nacho app verifies this on your device against a trust anchor you supply — no server is asked to vouch for it. You can also prove ownership to anyone by signing a message with your key.

Yes. To transfer or sell a handle, you bind it to a Bitcoin UTXO in a single transaction, after which it moves like any other Bitcoin output — including trustless atomic swaps for payment. Handles you're simply using don't need to touch the chain at all.
